Things to Do Any Time in July

The festivals and events in July in San Diego are the headline act, but San Diego’s classic attractions are at their absolute best in July — sunny, warm, and made for being outdoors. Here are the ones worth building a day around, no specific date required.

Soak Up the Sun at the Beach

July is peak beach season in San Diego, and with 70 miles of coastline, you’re spoiled for choice. Ocean temperatures climb to a swimmable 68°F or so this month, so it’s finally warm enough to spend the whole day in and out of the water.

For families, La Jolla Shores is hard to beat — gentle waves, soft sand, and plenty of room to spread out. If you want the boardwalk-and-bustle experience, head to Mission Beach or Pacific Beach. Surfers and sunset-watchers love Ocean Beach, while Coronado Beach serves up those postcard views with the Hotel del Coronado as a backdrop. For something quieter, the bluffs at Torrey Pines State Beach are stunning, and up north, you’ll find the beautiful beaches of Carlsbad. Traveling with a pup? We’ve rounded up the best dog beaches in San Diego, too.

One July tip: parking lots fill up fast on summer weekends, so arrive before 10 AM or be prepared to walk a few blocks. For the full rundown, see our guide to the best beaches in San Diego.

Visit the World-Famous San Diego Zoo

When: Anytime
Where: 2920 Zoo Dr, San Diego, CA 92101 (Balboa Park)
Website

No trip to San Diego is complete without a day at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Spread across 100 lush acres in Balboa Park, it’s home to thousands of animals, from elephants and polar bears to the much-loved giant pandas.

July is one of the best months to go, because the Zoo extends its hours for the summer Nighttime Zoo — live entertainment, a lively atmosphere, and cooler evening temperatures that bring the animals out to play. To make the most of your visit, buy your tickets online in advance and arrive early to beat both the crowds and the midday heat. First-timers should skim our San Diego Zoo tips before heading out.

Go Sailing on San Diego Bay

San Diego Bay is one of the finest natural harbors in the country, and July’s steady afternoon breezes and warm temperatures make it prime sailing season. Whether you’ve never touched a tiller or you’re a seasoned skipper, there’s a way to get out on the water.

Hop aboard a skippered charter and simply sit back with a drink while someone else handles the sails, join a small-group sunset sail for golden-hour views of the skyline, or book a lesson or rental if you’d rather captain it yourself. Operators around Harbor Island and Shelter Island offer everything from breezy two-hour cruises to private half-day charters.

Take a Relaxing Harbor Cruise

If sailing sounds like a bit much, a narrated harbor cruise is the easy, low-effort way to see San Diego from the water — no skills required. Glide past the downtown skyline, cruise beneath the iconic Coronado Bridge, pass the Navy ships at the naval base, and keep an eye out for the sea lions lounging on the buoys.

Most operators run one-hour and two-hour narrated tours throughout the day, with sunset and dinner cruises in the evenings — a lovely way to cap off a warm July day. They’re family-friendly and a great pick if you want sightseeing without the sunburn.
